The Ultimate Tux Guide

Wedding guest dress alternative, office stalwart, smart-casual dress code solution, celebratory dinner frequenter… we could go on. Two and three-piece suits as well as women’s tuxedos aren’t having a moment anymore, they’ve become just as shorthand in our sartorial lexicons as they are in men’s. Worthwhile investments, today’s versions are more contemporary-cool than corporate and are finding ways into both casual and more elegant, elevated evening outfitting.

With classic, pared-back palettes, this season’s veritable selection of women’s suits spans the reinvented tuxedo to a soft iteration of a classic pinstripe suit, forming a robust base for a versatile forever wardrobe.

An Ode to the Original

Tuxedos and red carpets have a long and storied past - practically since the dawn of Hollywood, on-screen heartthrobs, heroes and villains have turned to suits to take their spot in a sea of lightbulb flashes - but in the past couple of decades, more female celebrities have turned to the style as well. Named after Tuxedo Park in New York where the style took off in the 20th Century, the original tux was designed for our very own Prince Edward VII as a more informal alternative to the structured Victorian styles that came before it.

Benefitting from the past couple hundred years, our tuxedo suits have been tweaked and perfected. They hero a classic combination of matte and lustrous finishes alongside a shawl lapel on the blazer, but with a few key intelligent design updates. Firstly, the option of a cropped trouser that highlights the narrowest point of your ankles, and secondly, a striking wide-leg pair in either a regular or short length to accommodate petites.

Chalked Up

Two words: Italian tailoring. The country as synonymous with perfectly cut suiting as it is pizza and enviable seaside destinations boasts a tailoring history that stretches back to the middle of the 12th century. So where else could we have sourced fabric for our own suits?

Decidedly feminine but still structured, this pinstripe suit is crafted from Italian wool-blend tailoring that features chalk stripes set on a grey backdrop to complement your pick of pairings - if you’re in the mood for uplifting colour, the lighter shades hold their own with even the boldest hues or if you’re hankering after a more neutral palette, the soft grey complements that. Subtle pattern clashing is made easy too thanks to the less obvious print teamed with a striking Breton or subtle stripe.

The Perfect Match(es)

There’s something oh so very corporate about a traditional tailored suit. School uniforms, trading room floors and Don Draper come to mind, none of which have any appeal to the modern woman’s wardrobe. Shedding their connotations with stuffiness and restrictive cuts, our (aptly named) Perfect Workwear suits hero faultlessly engineered fits and comfortable fabrics specifically chosen for desk-to-dinner versatility. They’re built on your choice of two different trouser styles that are joined by both a long and short blazer to flatteringly complement every height and build.

Two’s Company

Buried somewhere in the shelves of a Savile Row tailor’s shop covered in dust there must be a rulebook that decrees a suit can only be made up of a blazer and trousers in the same fabric and print or colour. Why else would no one have thought to create one that boasts two subtly clashing patterns?

We’re turning our backs on tradition by introducing a flattering two-piece to our July Collection that heroes a fine puppytooth pattern through its cropped trousers and a contrasting check through the blazer. As both pieces are set on a black-and-white base, the result is just as cohesive as every other tux you’ve met before but with a decidedly modern feel.

Here’s to Herringbone

It’s a pattern that can trace its roots to ancient Egyptian jewellery and paved Roman roads, on fabrics and tailoring, it creates a subtle textural finish that has more depth than a simple weave. Yes, we’re talking about herringbone. Brought into the 21st Century, we’ve championed it on the wool-blend tailoring defining both a wide-leg and cropped trouser as well as a coordinating double-breasted blazer to build two navy suits that have office and occasionwear versatility.

Fawn-Worthy Flannel

Flannel minus the checks and associations with barn dances, our version of the fabric is a blend of wool and lyocell and is crafted in Italy. It’s covered in a classic navy colourway and defines both an easy, relaxed wide-leg trouser suspended from a high-rise waistband and a short blazer. The effortless elan synonymous with both cements this suit in elevated everyday styling teamed with a Breton top and knit loosely tied at your shoulders for a more casual finish. Sign off your look with low-top trainers. Simple.

Flannel Wide-Leg Trouser Suit

+ Bracelet-length sleeves keep long-sleeved base layers on display, creating a multifaceted finish

+ A blazer in a shorter length doesn’t drown more petite frames

+ Deep hems on the wide-leg trousers allow you to lengthen and shorten the style
