Why Seersucker Is The Ultimate Summer Fabric

We’re positioning seersucker as this summer’s hero fabric. It’s lightweight, airy and has a storied, continent-spanning history that proves its timeless appeal. From its name, derived from the Persian phrase ‘shir-o-shakhar’, which means ‘milk and sugar’, to its status as a legendary staple of summer tailoring throughout 19th-century New Orleans, seersucker has remained a constant in an ever-changing market.
1. It’s Timeless

It’s just at home in modern wardrobes as it is a part of history, and styles like our Maxi Shirt Dress + Belt spotlight how contemporary and timeless style unite. Blue and white stripes bring a classic look to the Italian cotton-blend fabric, while a dropped-waist bodice gives the illusion of a two-piece set. Use the optional tie for a more cinched look, or swap it out for one of this season’s new leather and suede belts.
2. Airy + Breathable

Seersucker is characterised by its puckered, usually striped surface achieved by its specific woven technique that causes the threads to bunch together. This distinctive look and feel is what gives seersucker its airy, breathable texture, which naturally lifts from the skin and facilitates an airy feel.
We’ve utilised seersucker’s unique texture to create the ultimate summer dress in this mini shirt style. Made from a textured cotton blend with Chocolate and white stripes, this collared style features buttoned cuff sleeves and an optional tie belt. The back is fitted with an elasticated panel and inverted pleats through the skirt to keep a soft fit-and-flare silhouette even when it’s worn without the belt.
3. Texture = Soft Structure
Offering a tactile elevation on classic cotton and linen summer styles, seersucker’s naturally textured surface gives it a softly structured finish, which lends itself to more deliberate shapes like voluminous sleeves or a flared skirt.
Combining bold colour and a statement shape, our Seersucker Midi Shirt Dress + Belt comes in one of the season’s hottest shades, Lipstick Red. The long midi silhouette adds an AM-PM styling edge, while buttoned flap pockets and a dropped hem add a balance of utilitarian and feminine codes.

Another style that foregrounds texture is our Pleated Stripe Maxi Skirt. We’ve incorporated TENCEL™ Lyocell into the fabric of this style, which adds an extra fluid quality, while still retaining the classically puckered, striped texture of seersucker. The high-rise waist hugs the hips, before flaring into white-lined inverted pleats for a gently voluminous look.

4. Day-To-Night Adaptability

The great thing about a crease-resistant fabric that doesn’t need to be ironed is how it transitions seamlessly between day and night. A quick accessories switch-up is all you need to give your look an evening-ready elevation.
A jumpsuit like our Stripe Crop Belted style is the ultimate choice for AM-PM. The textured cotton seersucker has a Dark Olive and White striped palette and features double pleats at the hips to create statement volume through the legs. Secure the tie belt by day and swap it out for a wider, more structured style like our Italian suede Waist Belt by night.
5. It’s Travel Friendly

Seersucker is one of the few fabrics that truly doesn’t need to be ironed. Thanks to its already puckered surface, it’s more resistant to creasing, making it ideal for wearing during travelling or for long days in the office.
A seersucker trouser like our Relaxed Man Pant is a wardrobe secret weapon for creating on-the-go outfits that still look put together. A high-rise waist and streamlined legs complete with turn-up cuffs create a clean drape, while navy and white stripes add a classic touch and styling versatility.

Enjoy a bolder take on classic seersucker stripes with the latest version of our Trainer Grazer Trouser. Named after the considered length that’s designed to finish just above your shoes, this pair has a wide-leg cut with single pleats to enhance the volume.
