Welcome to the Neighbourhood | Edinburgh

Celebrating our arrival in the Scottish capital and our first outpost outside London, we thought it apt to curate a neighbourhood guide to our newest home nestled in the heart of George Street.

We’re still a little new to the area but these local haunts have become fast favourites.

WHERE TO EAT

LANNAN

Opened by self-taught baker Darci Maher this summer, Lannan is a little way from our George Street store in Stockbridge, but it’s worth the walk. Their menu changes weekly and everything is made with local ingredients, from the filling for their handmade savoury pies to the coffee that’s roasted nearby. It’s the perfect post-pilates stop off, but go early as their queues can run around the block.

We can confirm these custard slices taste as good as they look.

GLENEAGLES TOWNHOUSE

Next on our list, Gleneagles Townhouse in St Andrew Square. They’ve transformed a vast former banking hall into The Spence, a beautiful all-day restaurant and bar. This is also where we learnt that ‘spence’ is the Scottish term for larder. Pop in for a midweek lunch - the West Coast crab crumpet is perfect paired with a glass of chilled Picpoul - or if you’re indulging, try their decadent brunch. Held on the last weekend of every month, it has an unlimited seafood bar and a dessert room.

TIMBERYARD

Have a dinner with a difference at the Timberyarn. Recently awarded its first Michelin Star, this Scandinavian-inspired restaurant is housed in a 19th century warehouse. It’s known for its hands-on approach, foraging local ingredients and pickling and curing in-house. On your walk there, take a little detour through Grassmarket to take in the sights of the castle.

WHERE TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS

THE ROYAL MILE

Walk via the Royal Mile and up Victoria Street - it’s a tourist hotspot but an essential part of the Edinburgh experience.

HONE

If you’ve got time, start your day with a workout class. Hone is a boutique reformer pilates studio in a natural light-filled space nearby.

WHERE TO SHOP

TOPPING BOOKS

Lose yourself in this picturesque bookshop, housed in a Milliam Playfair building. Take advantage of their extremely well-read team for recommendations and discover new favourites in the (seemingly) never-ending rooms lined with floor-to-ceiling book-filled shelves.

I.K. MELLIS CHEESEMONGER

Pick up some take-home snacks at I.J. Mellis. A cheese lover’s dream, the cheesemonger has been in business for over 30 years and once even took to maturing cheese in the cellar of their shop on Western Road. Today, though, they operate as a delectable deli, stocking an impressive assortment of local delicacies.

ME+EM

Of course, we couldn’t complete our Edinburgh Guide without a stop-off at our very own store. The first ME+EM space outside London

Our most palatial store to date is located on George Street. The carefully designed interiors celebrate the building’s Victorian heritage with our signature ME+EM decor. It stocks our largest footwear collection of any of our stores and roomy changing rooms.
