Mother’s Day Gifts for Every Type of Mom
Words by: Esther Achara. Design by: Melanie Makariou
Whether it's a birthday, a promotion, or a national holiday like Mother's Day, the matriarchs in our lives are notorious for deflecting when it comes to specifying what they’d like to be gifted.
Understandable? Yes, they have a million other things on their minds. Frustrating? Absolutely. Because, selfishly, where does that leave us?
If her answer is some variation of "I don’t want anything," "I just want to be with you guys," "Breakfast in bed," or the absolute worst: "Just surprise me," we've not only decoded what she actually means but found a stunning, wrap-able solution she's sure to love.
Ahead, what she really wants, whether she knows it yet or not.
“I Don’t Want Anything” aka the Multitasker
She runs two companies, heads up the PTA and is always available when you call. But when you ask about her needs? Crickets. This power woman needs a handsfree purse, at minimum. Our 5-way-belt-bag, which we affectionately nicknamed 'mother's little helper', is the singular accessory that works as hard as she does. It holds up her pants, carries her phone and credit cards, and can be worn 5 ways, all while leaving her hands free for calls, and the people in her life who are constantly reaching for them. Similarly, our Oversized Blazer can be worn collar up and buttoned, or open as a layering piece. Styling it different ways in the same day makes her look fresh from the office to the school performance afterwards.
“Just Surprise Me” aka The Art Lover
Abstract prints on decadent fabrics that elicit a rush of emotion in both the wearer and onlooker is the type of gift this feelings-driven matriarch deserves. Our bias-cut silk gown, with its sculptural neckline and rippling hem, is something of an architectural masterpiece that she's sure to appreciate. Meanwhile, our playfully asymmetric sandals offer the same experience in shoe form. Tactile scarves and graphic frames are the accessories that are sure to delight.
"I Just Want to Be with My Family" aka The Traveler
Nobody needs a getaway quite like a working mother. And if jetting off to Thailand for a well-earned wellness retreat is in her love language, then gifting her a timeless keepsake to kickstart her capsule vacation wardrobe will make for a memorable conversation. A universally flattering, black ruched swimsuit is the oceanside equivalent of an LBD, while a pendant that's reminiscent of a souvenir from a memorable sojourn makes for the perfect accessory.
“Breakfast In Bed” aka The Minimalist
If she’s a fan of a pared-back lifestyle, then gifting her something unwanted that will clutter up her much-needed physical space should not be in your plans. She’d rather receive nothing at all (code word: breakfast in bed) than an item she’ll have to stealthily regift or look at disparagingly all day. If a surprise is non-negotiable, then veer toward items that are infinitely reusable, like a classic blazer, well-structured t-shirt, or a knitted tank in neutral tones that work as summer essentials, or foundational layering pieces as she moves into fall. Alternatively, a beautifully woven cashmere-blend scarf that works as an airplane cover-up or movie-night blanket on the sofa is sure to be well received.
